Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) - NHS

'Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. It's most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems.

How CBT works:

Thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations are interconnected, and negative thoughts and feelings can trap people in a vicious cycle.

CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts.'

Unlike some other talking treatments, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past.

Use of CBT:

CBT has been shown to be an effective way of treating a number of different mental health conditions.

In addition to depression or anxiety disorders, CBT can also help people with:

borderline personality disorder
eating disorders – such as anorexia and bulimia
panic disorder
phobias
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
sleep problems – such as insomnia
problems related to alcohol misuse

It looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis.

What happens in CBT sessions?

If CBT is recommended, you'll usually have a session with a therapist once a week or once every 2 weeks.

you'll work with your therapist to break down your problems into their separate parts, such as your thoughts, physical feelings and actions.

This inspired me to present the video by breaking down the problem into smaller interrogative questions. Also, I am thinking of show up the question from general and shallow to detail and deep. Moreover, the content of the questions leads to something that can make students feel overwhelmed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

it may be helpful in cases where medication alone has not worked
it can be completed in a relatively short period of time compared with other talking therapies
the highly structured nature of CBT means it can be provided in different formats, including in groups, self-help books and online
it teaches you useful and practical strategies that can be used in everyday life, even after the treatment has finished

Cons:

you need to commit yourself to the process to get the most from it – a therapist can help and advise you, but they need your co-operation
it involves confronting your emotions and anxieties – you may experience initial periods where you're anxious or emotionally uncomfortable
it focuses on the person's capacity to change themselves (their thoughts, feelings and behaviours) – this does not address any wider problems in systems or families that often have a significant impact on someone's health and wellbeing

Some critics also argue that because CBT only addresses current problems and focuses on specific issues, it does not address the possible underlying causes of mental health conditions, such as an unhappy childhood.

By viewing the pros and cons, I firmly believe this is an easy way to help students to deal with mental health. This therapy I think is mainly achieved by letting people raise awareness of how to change their mindset on issues. Based on this idea, they can potentially solve the mental disorder problem, but this will depend on whether the patient is making an effort.

More importantly, although CBT is criticised for only focusing on dealing with current problems, this is what students need. In my opinion, a lot of pressure comes from studying. If this is the case ( anxious about results etc.), it is more likely to be short-term issues on mental health.

Another con mentioned below in the article is it is hard to insist to go the client because of the high frequency of appointments. This links back to the thesis I researched before. There is data supporting that many college students who have anxiety disorder doses go to see a therapist, but only for a starting point. Many students didn't go anymore after the first few appointments. Meanwhile, a large amount of student does search online to learn about how to solve mental health problems online.

Therefore, I think making a video that can be like an online 'CBT 'Can increase the number of students accessing it. This then can meet my aim written in the project proposal as well that I reported: finding an accessible way to solve mental problems.

And the solution I came up with is suggesting to state at present in general, as sometimes they can't be solved because they are just an emotion that needs to be expressed, along with the actual problem. ( this part still needs to deal with a therapist )
